As people of faith, we sometimes need inspiration. We also need a supportive faith community. Sixteen-year-old Anna Chase knows where she can find both. Every summer since fifth grade, she has attended Catholic Youth Camp (CYC) at the St. Thomas More Center in Panora. There, the Dowling sophomore gathers with friends her own age for a powerful faith experience that brings them closer to God and to each other. “It’s an opportunity to focus on my own faith,” she explains, “and really figure out different ways that I can live it out.”
A week at CYC includes traditional camp activities along with faith programs, small group discussions, Holy Mass, and time for prayer. Anna says attending Adoration with her friends at CYC is especially meaningful. “It’s so calm, and there are so many people, and everyone is just focused on praying.” This special atmosphere helps them prepare for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. “Everyone is kind of nervous before going into Reconciliation,” she says, “and then you do it, and you go back to Adoration, and everyone is forgiven, and you’re all there together.” For Anna, her connection to the community is a huge part of the experience.
She also points out the importance of hearing other people’s stories, especially when they share what has brought them to God and the struggles they face. She recalls the story shared last summer by a member of the CYC staff who talked about the saints and how we can look to them as role models. “She was so joyful and so deep in her faith,” Anna says. “It was really like…wow, I want to be like that!”
But what happens after CYC is over and everyone goes home? “Afterwards you have to remember how it feels, and how joyful it is.” Anna admits it can be difficult, but she says it’s important to stay engaged with your faith life. “The more you do it, the more interested you become.”
With that in mind, she has some routines that keep her going, like attending Adoration in the Chapel at Dowling before lunch each day and trying to pray in the morning. She encourages everyone, especially other teens, to stay engaged in their faith in a way that works for them—whether it’s through CYC, SMASH, Adoration, or one of the many faith activities offered at Dowling and Sacred Heart. “Take advantage of the opportunities you’re given,” Anna says. “There’s something for everyone.”
